Backyard Chickens – Run Extension

Backyard Chickens – Chicken Run Extension

It is advised that you have at least 10 square feet (SF) of run space per bird. In my case with 17 birds I need then 170 SF. My current run was only 5×8′, so far below what’s needed.

Here I have added on with another 50 SF. So that gets me up to 90 SF total. Still not enough, but much better. The beauty of this system is that it is modular and adaptable. I matched the width and door size, so I just placed the extension up against the end of the first run, and then moved the door down to the end of the addition.

It is a bit pricey to build these extensions. Ideally I would just let the birds run in the back yard, but I have to keep them someone contained and hidden since I’m not supposed to have them in my neighborhood. I’m going to try to add more space when I have the chance, but for now I’m bounded by my rain barrel and compost bins.
